New Illinois Law Requires AED Trained Staff Members in All Fitness Facilities and Schools: The Colleen O’Sullivan Law, Public Act 093-0910, was adopted by the Illinois General Assembly in late 2004. This new life-saving law was created in response to the death of a young government staffer, who died without the aid of an AED device. This law not only requires an on-site AED device but a trained AED user who can assist in emergency situations like the one encountered by Colleen O’Sullivan. (Click here to view the act)

13 Year Old Helps Save Tour Boat Accident Victims with CPR Skills: A capsized tour boat in New York‘s Lake George is making national news. Over 20 elderly boat passengers were killed by the unfortunate event on Sunday 10/2/05. As they continue to investigate what caused this tragic boat accident, CAATS would like to recognize the 13-year-old girl, Alexandra Rahal who used CPR to help in the rescue efforts. IDOC staff member uses CPR and an AED to Save Student Teacher: Jeff Hart, staff development specialist at Illinois Department of Correction's Training Academy, serves as a coach for the seventh and eighth grade girls basketball team at Auburn Middle School. On Firday 9/19/03 22-year-old student teacher Jessica Ball lost conciousness while participating in the drills. Jeff Hart and fellow coach Marsha Funneman used both CPR and an available AED to save the young teacher's life. Saving Lives in a Heartbeat: A Detroit Redwing player (defenseman Jiri Fischer) collapses after a hockey game in November. This article from The Grand Rapids Press 12/6/05, talks briefly about the incident then elaborates on the AED technology that saved his life. The article focuses on expanding AED usage and how common it is to now see these CPR assisting devices in public areas.
